Jonathan's Coffeeblog: September Song

[Like a kid coming back from summer vaction]

Bye-Bye Summer

The first day of September has rolled around. The belladonna lilies warned me. Of course it had to happen. Summer has got to end. It's not officially over until 22 September at 1544 UTC. But here in the USA, today is Labor Day, the first Monday on September, reportedly established in 1882 by the Central Labor Union of New York, Brooklyn, and New Jersey. It's the last day of a symbolic summer vacation. Tomorrow is back to work.

So what? So nothing. At least not here in Northern California, where we have an "Indian Summer" which can last through October, when the weather is warmer that our usual foggy summers. In fact it's pretty warm today, so warm that I'm sitting in the shade of a huge vine in the side terrace at Espresso Roma Hopkins. The air temperature is pretty close to perfect. But for all that, I'm still feeling like a kid coming back from the summer vaction, knowing that he will be going back to school within a few days.

What I'm beginning to comprehend is that every year is different. Sometimes Spring is the best season of the year on the Northern California coast. This year, however, was kind of a bust. The wildflowers were not as spectacular as they are sometimes. It's been a dry winter this year, and that's probably why. Maybe Fall will be the best season of 2008. We'll find out.

And if the rest of the year turns out disappointing, there's always the first week of January: MacWorld Expo.
